Bus Transportation

CHRIS CORDER
DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION

The Hardin County Schools' Pupil Transportation Department strives to provide safety and enhance efficiency in pupil transportation through constant training and public awareness.

Safety is the foundation for the Transportation Services for Hardin County Schools. It's also the primary concern when transporting the students of our district.  We work to provide quality transportation and continually upgrade our services to meet or exceed Kentucky's state guidelines.

Safety, as it relates to school buses is the responsibility of everyone...students, parents, school staff, bus operators and the motoring public. To be successful in our efforts, it is essential for all of us to work together toward the same goal of safe, efficient transportation.

Transportation Statistics
The Hardin County Board of Education operates the fourth largest transportation system in Kentucky. Each day more than 14,000 students are transported to three high schools, five middle schools, and twelve elementary schools. In addition, students are transported to various programs at other sites such as the Early College and Career Center, College View Campus, the Board of Education Central Office Annex for TVP, Hardin County Day Treatment and student work programs.

The school bus fleet is made up of more than 200 buses that make almost 600 regular runs. In addition, 26 buses serve the special needs program and each of those buses is staffed with a special needs monitor. There are also 47 preschool runs and 21 miscellaneous runs each school day. The fleet travels in excess of 16,000 miles daily.

Along with regular runs, the transportation department makes 2786 extracurricular trips as well as trips for athletic events, which are driven by regular drivers or coaches.

The transportation staff consists of 195 school bus drivers, and 50 bus assistants, who assist the drivers in the transportation of three and four-year-old students. Each driver must complete a state-mandated training program before becoming a school bus driver. They must also receive additional annual training to keep their certification. To help ensure a safer ride for the children of Hardin County, each driver is screened for drugs prior to employment and screened at random each month for drugs and alcohol.

Every bus in the fleet is serviced each month with a full safety inspection by a state-certified safety inspector. The district maintains a full-service repair shop with highly trained ASE-certified service technicians. Drivers are also trained to check their vehicles daily and to report anything that may be a safety concern. A safety coordinator investigates all accidents and, together with the Safe Driving Award Board, concentrates on the prevention of accidents. In the interest of safety, a video camera program is in place to assist drivers in the area of student management.

Hardin County has long been recognized as having an outstanding transportation system with an excellent safety record. Each student attending pre-school through fifth grade receives a bus safety class from the transportation staff.
